Register a .pt domain
The domain of Portugal, registered directly with the registry. We are an accredited registrar, so there is nobody between your order and the .PT database.
The price to register is the price to renew. There is no first-year offer here that turns into something else in twelve months.
What you need
A .pt domain is registered in the name of a holder, and the registry needs that holder identified. In practice that means three things.
- A tax number The NIF of the person or company that will own the domain. When the country is Portugal the registry checks it, so it has to be the real one.
- Contact details A postal address, a telephone number and an email address. These go to the registry, not to us alone, and they are what the registry uses to reach the holder.
What changed in July 2026
Since 1 July 2026 the registry requires the holder of a .pt domain to be identified and validated before the domain can be registered, changed or transferred. This comes from the Portuguese cybersecurity law that transposes the European NIS2 directive.
In practice it means the details above are no longer a formality. A domain whose holder has not been validated can be held back, and the same applies to changes on domains that already exist.
We send that validation to the registry as part of the order, so there is no second step for you. If you already hold a .pt domain elsewhere and it has been flagged, transferring it here puts it through the same process.
The rules, briefly
Since the 2012 liberalisation a .pt domain is open to any person or company, in Portugal or abroad. You no longer have to prove that the name is yours or that you trade under it.
Letters, digits and hyphens, from 3 to 63 characters, not starting or ending with a hyphen. Portuguese accented characters are allowed.
Names of countries, districts and municipalities are restricted, as are terms protected by law. If a name is reserved the search will say so rather than let you order it.
Conflicts over a .pt name are settled by ARBITRARE, the arbitration centre for industrial property, rather than in court.
Transferring a .pt domain here
To move a domain you need its transfer code, which the registry calls the authorisation code. You get it from your current provider or from the registry's own reserved area.
The domain keeps the time it already has. A transfer does not shorten or reset the expiry date, and it does not interrupt the site while it happens.
What is included
Everything below comes with the domain. None of it is an extra that appears at checkout.
- Gestão de DNS
- Registo na hora
- Bloqueio de transferência
- Renovação avisada
Questions people ask
- Who can register a .pt domain?
- Anyone. Since 2012 a .pt domain is open to any person or company, in Portugal or abroad, with no need to prove a connection to the name.
- Do I need a NIF to register a .pt domain?
- Yes. The registry requires a tax number for the domain holder, and checks it when the country is Portugal. A company registers with its own tax number, an individual with theirs.
- How long does a .pt registration take?
- The registration itself is immediate: we talk to the registry directly and the domain is created during the order. Propagation across the internet takes a few hours more before the name answers everywhere.
- Does renewal cost more than registration?
- No. The price you pay to register is the price you pay every year after. We do not run a first-year discount that expires into a higher renewal.
- Can I use my own nameservers?
- Yes. The registry requires at least two, and you can change them at any time from your account. The change reaches the registry immediately.
- What changed for .pt domains in July 2026?
- Since 1 July 2026 the registry requires the holder to be identified and validated before a domain is registered, changed or transferred. This follows the Portuguese cybersecurity law that transposes the European NIS2 directive. We handle the validation as part of the order.
